Unless providentially hindered, every believer is responsible to pursue a formal relationship with a local church which is solidified and solemnized in baptism and characterized by the church’s affirmation and oversight of his/her discipleship and the person’s submission to living out discipleship in the care of that church.
How do I join?
Prayerfully consider the nature and costs of this commitment. While biblically required of all believers, the relationship with a local church places a weight of responsibility on each one. For more detail, please see our “Church Covenant” below.
Indicate your desire to pursue membership by speaking with one of our elders or ministry staff members and completing a membership form.
Continue participating in the life and ministry in congregational worship, small groups, and more.
Complete the appropriate steps — membership interview, baptism (if necessary), affirming the Church Covenant — and await affirmation by the congregation at our next member meeting.
Having, as we trust, been brought by divine grace to repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and to give up ourselves to him, and having been baptized upon our profession of faith, in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, we do now, relying on His gracious aid, solemnly and joyfully covenant with the local manifestation of Christ’s Body known as Parkway Baptist Church.
We will work and pray for the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. We will walk together in fellowship with the other covenant members of Parkway. In brotherly love, we will exercise an affectionate care and watchfulness over each other, and faithfully admonish and entreat one another as occasion may require. We will not forsake meeting together, but will participate in congregational worship and more intimate discipleship. We will not allow our attitude or actions to be determined by personal preferences. We will pray for ourselves and others. We will rejoice at each other’s happiness and strive with tenderness and sympathy to bear each other’s burdens and sorrows. We will guard the unity of Parkway by protecting her from gossip and submitting to the spiritual authority given to us by God. We will follow Jesus by investing personally in others for our mutual edification.
We will seek, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to live carefully in the world, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, and remembering that, as we have been voluntarily buried by baptism and raised again from the symbolic grave, so there is on us a special obligation now to lead a new and holy life. We will seek to know and understand God’s Word through careful and diligent private and congregational study. We will strive to nurture our families in the admonition of the Lord. We will strive, by the Holy Spirit, to live in obedience to God’s Word.
We will invest our time, spiritual gifts, energy, and resources to work together for the continuance of a faithful evangelical ministry in this church. We will give regularly and joyfully to the support the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel through all nations. We will, through our service, support the sustaining of Parkway’s worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines.
We will strive, by our lifestyle and verbal witness, to seek the salvation of all those around us. We will pray for and support – through our lifestyle, participation, and contributions – the ongoing missions efforts to the spread of the Gospel locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.
By this covenant, we bind our hearts and lives to one another in Christ. We will, when we move from this place, as soon as possible, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen.
